Unplanned Pregnancy

By Bambang Hermanto

Pregnancy can occur at any time or place during a woman’s life. An unplanned pregnancy happens when you least expect it, like when you are getting a new promotion at work or after you have paid your car off. Pregnancy is not considered to be a good thing for a woman who does not want to have children in the near future, or at all. Being pregnant means carrying a baby in your womb for nine months, endearing physical changes to your body, and ultimately being responsible for another life for the next eighteen years.

If your pregnancy is unplanned, you may be upset with yourself and your partner for being irresponsible. You may also be confused if you used birth control but somehow it does not work. It could cause you to feel overwhelmed because you do not know what to do from here on out.

Before we discuss the options you have, let’s discuss what you need to do when your test comes out positive.

First, realize that an unplanned pregnancy is not the end of the world (even though you may think it is). It is not a life threatening situation, so do not panic. Do not make any rational decisions. Keep in mind, that you had no total control in the matter. Yes, you had irresponsible sex, but pregnancy is a chance of fate. You have no control over that your contraceptive stop working and no control over your partner’s urges. Once you regain control over your thoughts, you can start to decide rationally on what to do.

Face the responsibility and take it for what it is. Realize that you are no longer the victim of circumstance but the master of circumstance. Do not live in the past; think about the present and your future. It may take a while for that feeling of regret and guilt to go away, but it will go away. So take a deep breath, lift your head up, and move on.

If you are confused about what choices you have for your unplanned pregnancy, there are people you can talk to and websites you can visit to give you some sort of direction. Ultimately you have three choices: abortion, adoption, or being a parent.

While adoption or being a parent is a hard decision to make, so is abortion. With abortion, you are terminating a life. However, if this is your decision, make sure that it is your decision and there is no one else doing it for you. You need to do what is right for you and your life.
