Early Signs of Pregnancy
Executive Summary By Terry Ross
There a many early signs of pregnancy, most of which, when taken in isolation could occur as a result of other health or lifestyle factors. Pregnant women will not necessarily experience all or even any of the symptoms and, on the rare occasion, women will even continue to have a period throughout their pregnancy, although a missed period is the main telltale sign. · It is estimated that approximately 25% of pregnant women experience bleeding (known as implantation bleeding) very early on in a pregnancy. This bleeding is one of the early signs of pregnancy with a small amount of spotting or bleeding usually occurring around 5 – 12 days after fertilization. An implantation bleed usually occurs ahead of your normal menstrual cycle, is spottier than a normal period, don’t last very long (usually a day or two, but varies from woman to woman) and tends to be light in colour (pink or brown spotting).
- Tender swollen breasts, like implantation bleeding, is one of the very early signs of pregnancy. Fatigue is one of the early signs of pregnancy that can occur as early as the first week following conception and is thought to be as a result of hormonal changes. Once the body has adjusted to the hormonal and metabolic changes that occur at the start of a pregnancy women’s energy levels tend to increase.
- A missed period can be a dead giveaway as an early sign of pregnancy especially if you have been trying to conceive and normally enjoy a regular menstrual cycle. The constant need to urinate is one of the most annoying signs of pregnancy. If you believe you may be pregnant then take a test and if the result is positive make an appointment to see your practitioner.

There are several signs and symptoms of pregnancy that you may experience very early on in your pregnancy, before your period is ever missed. Unfortunately, these signs are not unlike the symptoms you experience before your period, making it hard to distinguish what is really going on. Many women experience tender breasts and associate it with PMS, but raging hormones also cause this when you first become pregnant. Many women feel very tired early on in their pregnancy. This fatigue is a result of changing hormones and body chemistry as well as the sheer amount of work that a woman’s body is doing when conception occurs. Next, you may experience implantation bleeding. This is a very rare sign of pregnancy, but it does happen. If you don’t experience the implantation bleeding it’s not a sure sign that you are not pregnant, as it is only experienced in 1/3 of all pregnancies.
Perhaps the hallmark of early pregnancy signs is nausea. A missed period is a sure sign that there is something going on, usually pregnancy. If you do not keep track of your periods or you do not have regular periods this one can take awhile to catch onto, but if the nausea doesn’t tip a woman off to the fact that she is pregnant, than the missed period usually will.
About the time that the missed period and nausea set in, other women report an increase in hunger. Other women report that they have no appetite at all. This sign can swing either way and may vary from day to day depending on nausea and other pregnancy symptoms. Think you may need to do a home pregnancy test? Pregnancy can be a life changing event. Here are some of the early signs of pregnancy to help you decide if it’s time for that all important test:
Often, your family will notice that you are irritable or moody before you even begin to suspect that you’re pregnant. Hormonal surges during the early stages of pregnancy can cause mood swings worse than those from PMS. You might also feel tired, another of the early signs of pregnancy, but fatigue can be a sign of may other conditions as well.
Morning sickness, characterized by nausea and vomiting, can range from a slight queasy feeling to vomiting. It may occur at just one time in the day, perhaps mornings when hormone levels are highest, or all day. Morning sickness is often accompanied by changes in appetite and food cravings, both of which may also continue throughout the pregnancy.
Your breasts may feel swollen and tender, or especially sensitive. Changes in the breasts are very early signs of pregnancy and should disappear after a few weeks.
Finally, missing your period is often the clearest sign that you may be pregnant, although newly pregnant women may experience some spotting as the egg implants in the uterine wall.
Some women experience just one or two of early signs of pregnancy, and some experience all. Each pregnancy is different. However, if you are experiencing any of these symptoms and suspect that you might be pregnant, do a home pregnancy test. Your baby’s health depends on it!
